What sustainable materials companies should use and why?

Earth is the fifth largest planet in our solar system, and it's the only one known for sure to have liquid water on its surface. Every other solar system planet was named for a Greek or Roman deity, but for at least a thousand years, some cultures have described our world using the Germanic word “earth,” which means simply “the ground.”

Imagine a turtle swimming through the ocean and thinking “Oh it’s a crab” thinking it’s his dinner, while swimming towards its dinner, grabs it and swallows it. Little did he know that it was a plastic bag. The sea turtle can suffocate and die from it. Could you imagine walking through the street, breathing and you inhale a plastic bag? Or imagine sitting at a restaurant and your food is being served and its a plate full of plastic bags - would you eat it? We guessed so, why would you think it’s okay for the animals to live that life?

Obviously not ALL plastic is bad for us as we have airbags, helmets and medical supplies which are life savers. However, there is a lot of unnecessary plastic which can easily be exchanged. It is 2021, we got the access - why are so many companies not making the switch?

With Sustainability as our core value at The Story of Moira, we have to do our best to provide products made from Eco-friendly materials that bring you closer to a harmonious balance between humanity and mother nature. There are plentiful alternatives to plastic derived products for us to use. It's important for us, to do this extra step as a company to align our values to our actions and for a better future, not only for us but also our grand children, don't you think?

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth. Bamboo is a highly sustainable plant and it can grow to its full size in just 3 to 4 months! Compare this to other trees which can take more than 30 years to grow.

Did you know Bamboo grows super-fast? A Bamboo Tree can grow 3 feet tall in 24 hours which means you can literally watch it grow right in front of you! This makes it a super sustainable alternative due to its naturally renewing properties. Pesticides and chemicals aren't required when harvesting bamboo. This means the cultivation is natural. Our bamboo toothbrush handles are 100% natural and biodegradable, once finished with its use they are safe to be composted and returned back into the earth, it typically takes bamboo approximately 3 years to completely break down when fully submerged in soil.

Our Bamboo Toothbrush handles are plastic free. However, the bristles are Dupont BPA free nylon bristles. You probably ask why we haven’t got plastic free bristles? Because the invention hasn’t been made yet. Nobody has created fully plastic free bristles yet. A lot of companies are working on it and so are we. We hope to find a sustainable alternative, for now the BPA-free Nylon bristles with bamboo handles are a MUCH BETTER alternative than the regular plastic Toothbrushes.

Organic cotton is cotton that is produced and certified to organic agricultural standards. Its production sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people by using natural processes rather than artificial inputs. We use organic cotton to create our reusable cotton pads to help reduce the waste associated with single use cotton pads. Organic cotton farming does not allow the use of toxic chemicals or GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Instead, it combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote a good quality of life for all involved. Caring for the world and the people we share it with is a life choice. Choosing organic cotton is part of this choice. In 2015, 26 million metric tonnes of cotton were produced globally, much of it for the apparel industry. Organic cotton makes up less than 1% of this. By choosing organic over conventional cotton you have the purchasing power to influence brands, manufacturers and even farmers.

Konjac, also known as glucomannan, is a natural vegetable plant that grows in parts of Asia. It's known for its starchy corm, a tuber-like part of the stem that grows underground. It is fully sustainable and biodegradable. Our Konjac sponges are derived from the Konjac plant root. A Konjac sponge is a natural face and body cleansing sponge. Its soft texture makes it a gentle alternative to other sponges and allows for a thorough clean. It works to remove blackheads, oil and dirt from the surface of your skin by gently exfoliating away bacteria. Konjac replaces plastic sponges which break up after a while, meaning all those plastic fibres are being washed down the drain. Konjac also replaces the common alternative to plastic sponges, sea sponges.

When glass breaks down, it remains safe and stable, and releases no harmful chemicals into the soil. Glass is a fully recyclable material that can be recycled in close loop over and over again. Thanks to glass recycling, significant amounts of raw materials are saved and natural resources are preserved. Glass recycling also helps in saving energy as cullets melt at a lower temperature than raw materials. We use glass for packaging our tooth floss at The Story of Moira.

It is important to us to be always transparent and honest with you. If you are opposed to honey then you have to be opposed to beeswax as they are collected hand in hand. You can’t harvest honey without harvesting beeswax. You are collecting the beeswax at the same time as the honey. Beeswax is produced by the lovely bees to build comb, which they use to house their young and store honey. You get very little wax from a single honey harvest and it is difficult to find beeswax from small local suppliers, most beeswax comes from commercial beekeepers. We are looking to get a vegan & sustainable solution for this. However, it is a better alternative than the nylon dental floss which ends up in the ocean or on the street which then will be consumed by animals and it can be deadly.

The Story Of Moira offers Wholesale but we also do bespoke sustainable & Eco-friendly products. If you are in need of any items and don't know where to start. Send us an email and we are more than happy to guide you and help you change your plastic amenities to sustainable ones.

If you have any questions, we are always here to answer them. We would appreciate if you would like, share & comment your thoughts on this.

Have a wonderful Valentine's day!

Yours truly,

Shaya & Egle
